Strategy Proposal for the Future of the EBU and Duplicate Bridge in England

I am only one of many people who care greatly about the future of the EBU and Bridge in England. That is why I want to stop the flawed proposals made by the Board for 'Universal EBU Membership'

Your club and your county should consider what will happen if P2P is accepted.

Just a few key points:

·       Over 90% of all clubs will need to affiliate for an EBU P2P fee of 29 pence to show a profit.

o   Clearly this won’t happen, so the P2P fee will need to be raised.

·       Calculations made by looking at current Master Point income show that the P2P fee would need to be at least 35 pence, just to replace the current EBU income.

·       We will lose a huge number of clubs and players currently under our umbrella.

Look at the costs in detail:

·       P2P and universal membership means increasing costs, e.g. The EBU will have to send all new members a magazine and a diary and pay subscriptions to European and World bridge organisations.

·       A P2P club rate of at least 44 pence will be needed just to stop both the EBU and the Counties going bankrupt, and the final figure could easily be 50p or more. We won’t know the final figure for many months to come. But clubs will have to sign P2P contracts sooner rather than later.

·       If P2P is implemented, our Treasurer suggests will have “…no reserves to handle any overall shortfall in Pay-to-Play income, if, for instance, more clubs disaffiliated than expected…”

What P2P figure will our universal membership tolerate?

Clubs players have a choice! They can vote with their feet and chose to play in disaffiliated clubs.
